About the SEO Colour Wheel
A structured framework for visualising content performance and search intent alignment — created by Annie Veale in 2021.
The Framework
The SEO Colour Wheel is a content intent audit and progression framework. It maps every URL on a site to one of seven advanced intent categories — in clockwise order: functional, presentation, informational, application, desire, product, and brand — and visualises the distribution as an interactive sunburst chart.
Unlike generic SEO audits that focus on technical checklists, the Colour Wheel reveals the strategic shape of your content. It shows where your site over-indexes on certain intents, where gaps exist, and how well your pages align with the queries that bring visitors to them.
The framework is subject to UK copyright laws and licences are only available by arrangement.
How It Works
1. Upload Your Data
Export your sitemap or crawl data and upload it as a CSV. The tool accepts URLs alongside performance metrics like impressions, clicks, and position.
2. Map Columns
Match your CSV columns to the required fields — URL, intent category, and optional performance data — using the interactive column mapper.
3. Visualise
The sunburst chart renders your content distribution by intent, letting you instantly see the balance (or imbalance) across categories.
4. Act
Drill into segments to find cannibalisation, gaps, and misaligned content. Export findings as JSON or share interactive charts with your team.
Try it free
Run your first audit — no credit card
The free tier lets you upload a CSV of up to 250 URLs, map columns, and generate a full interactive sunburst chart against the seven-category framework. You keep the JSON export and a shareable embed link — enough to run a real diagnostic on a single site before deciding whether to go further.
- • Upload up to 250 URLs per chart on the free tier
- • Overlay any performance metric — impressions, clicks, position, revenue, conversions — from your own CSV
- • Export the diagnostic as JSON, or share it as an interactive embed
- • Upgrade to Self-Serve for larger sites, workspaces, and saved audits
Bespoke by Design
The seven-category clockwise model is the default — but the framework is deliberately flexible. Both the intent categories themselves and the data overlays can be tailored to a specific site, sector, or audit brief.
Custom categories
Rename, add, or replace categories to fit unusual site structures — an e-commerce catalogue, a membership community, or a public-sector information portal each benefit from a slightly different lens.
Custom overlays
Any numeric column in your CSV can drive the visualisation — GA4 sessions, GSC impressions, revenue, form fills, LLM citations — so the chart reflects the metric that matters to the audit.
Who It's For
The Colour Wheel is a diagnostic tool, not a keyword tool, rank tracker, or AI content generator. It's designed for:
- • SEO consultants running structured content audits for clients
- • In-house SEO and content teams looking to visualise coverage and gaps across a large site
- • Content strategists mapping editorial commissioning against user intent
- • Agencies presenting audit findings to non-technical stakeholders
It is not intended for keyword discovery, automated rewriting, or generative SEO — the framework is strictly descriptive, giving you an honest picture of what's on the site so a human strategist can decide what to do next.
